Unearthing Joy: The Best Part of Our Potato Growing Journey

After weeks of dedicated planting, nurturing, and growing, the moment of harvest is always the most rewarding. There's something truly magical about seeing the fruits of our labour come to life, and it's in these moments that the essence of the project shines brightest.

The sheer excitement and joy on the children's faces as they uncover their potatoes is a testament to the impact of bringing the journey from seed to plate to life. Harvesting transforms theoretical lessons into tangible experiences, making the concept of where food comes from an unforgettable reality for young learners.

I had the pleasure this year of visiting Crescent School in Rugby to participate in a truly rewarding experience—harvesting potatoes with two Year 2 classes. It was an unforgettable morning that marked the culmination of weeks of hard work and excitement.

The harvest, undoubtedly my favourite part of the project, was a delight to witness. The sheer joy on the children's faces when they saw the bags of potatoes being tipped out was priceless. The moment the children saw their harvest, their excitement was palpable and truly heart warming.

Their hard work paid off and their results were fantastic.

Casablanca 1: 801g (31 potatoes)
Casablanca 2: 679g (26 potatoes)
Total for Casablanca: 1480g

Shannon 1: 390g (22 potatoes)
Shannon 2: 542g (32 potatoes)
Total for Shannon: 932g

The quote from Jacqui Johnson the green fingered teacher at Crescent School, sums up the experience perfectly:

"The pupils at Crescent School have enjoyed planting, caring for, and growing their potato crops over the past term. There was great excitement when they harvested their crops, and then the children enjoyed their potatoes for lunch on the last day of term. This was a superb learning experience, which linked to the topic of plants, and taught pupils how plants reproduce and what plants need to grow. A big thank you to GYOP."

A heartfelt thank you to Crescent School for letting me be part of this incredible harvest experience. It was truly special to witness the excitement and joy on the children’s faces as they saw the fruits of their hard work.

Here’s a selection of images from some of the many I have received from other schools’ harvests this year.
